Independence Day (colloquial: July 4) is a federal holiday in the United States celebrating the Declaration of Independence of the United States, July 4, 1776. The Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies were no longer subject (and subordinated) to the monarch of Britain and were now united, free and independent. Congress had voted for secession two days before, on July 2, but was not declared until July 4th.
